Sandra asks…

How do you write a restaurant resume (food server position) and do you need a cover letter?

I have been on the job hunt for a little while now after moving away to go to school. I used to work at a restaurant(as a host, busser and server) and now it seems that on craigslist, almost all restaurants want you to submit your resume online (regardless, i’ve decided that it is probably best to just have a resume ready, as it looks more professional). Does anyone have any good examples of what my resume should look like? I found a few, mainly here-

http://career-advice.monster.com/resumes-cover-letters/resume-samples/sample-resume-restaurant-server/article.aspx

and

http://www.career-development-help.com/sample-food-server-resume.html

Both of those look relatively simple. Do I need to attach a cover letter? What exactly does the letter entail?

I hope I can get advice from a restaurant manager or something, because I want to know what you would normally see on a resume and how I can not make a fool out of myself by either under-doing it or overdoing it.

linda answers:

Under-do it. Restaurants have always been less formal about resumes and cover letters. Even the most expensive restaurants often do all their hiring face-to-face with no paperwork. The boss knows exactly what he is looking for. Skip the cover letter.
Walk in the door at the places that interest you. Someone will need your skills.

Mark asks…

Is anyone familiar with careers from Hartford Financial?

I received a call from someone with Hartford Financial and they requested an interview. I have a resume posted on Monster and I typically get phone calls from folks claiming to have job openings but are really recruiting for multi-level management type businesses. From what I found on their website they seem to be a high level company but it seems a tad odd that they would recruit someone from the retail industry as a sales professional in finance and insurance. I’m excited for an opportunity but wary when the only info I can find is on their website. Any advice would be appreciated!
He didn’t ask if I had any certifications or licenses. All he said was “You work in sales right? I’m looking to expand my team in this area …..(etc)”

By the way, I noticed I said multi-level management, I meant multi-level marketing.
Went to the interview. They were a joke. They aren’t even the reputable “The Hartford” who has been around since 1810, they are a 10 year old company “Hartford Financial”. They were recruiting Loan Officers as they are a mortgage loan company. The guy basically gave me Ben Affleck’s “act as if” speech from Boiler Room (if anyone has seen that movie) telling me I could be a millionaire while saying that they don’t give any leads on loans because that would take money out of his pocket. They barely asked any questions, just gave a speech on how they need hard workers not “slugs” who “waste their time.” I held my tongue, but wanted to tell them where to stick it.
Thanks for the help, btw, Joel F.

HF as I remember is a firm that specializes in the sale of stocks and bonds. The job may be for a telemarketer “cold calling” clients in order to sell them stocks and bonds. This is a tough job and pays very little unless you are good at it. Did they ask if you have a Series 7? That would be a good clue. In any event it wouldn’t be a bad idea to give them a call to see what the job is. It might be something you are looking for and good luck.

linda answers:

I marked this as interesting and put this question on my watch list. I am having the same problem. Everyone tells me to be patient and remember the economy. That is difficult to do, especially when I am in debt now for an education that is not paying off, and I am working at a job I cannot stand! Good luck to you, and if you find the secret to landing a good job, let me in on it!! Thanks!

Big problem with being laid off from my job?

Well I got laid off from my job. I have my associates in medical assisting. The big problem is that there are no CMA jobs in town. 1 because lpn’s are a first pick and 2 no one is retiring to leave open jobs. I’m not lazy by any means and check the web and paper daily. Former classmates can’t find work either. I do the monster and career builder thing but nothing…any advice or similar fields I could get into. I’m SOL right now. Can use any help cause I’m going bankrupt
The reason being laid off wasn’t cause I’m bad but I just got out of school and they cut the cord six months into the job so the veterans could keep it.

linda answers:

well why don’t u try getting into some sort of pharmaceutical company.. doing sales for them…. i know how u feel dude.. i really do..

look into that and also look into anyother type of medical sales

Steven asks…

Which career/job hunting sites are the best?

I live in Michigan and have been laid off since April. The economy is suffering here, and it is difficult finding something. I am using Careerbuilder and Monster, but it isn’t enough. Are there any other sites that may be beneficial? I have tried Hotjobs before, but it seems their concentration is on “Work from Home” opportunities or staffing agencies. I am a career professional in Sales Administration. I could really use some help. Any advice or feedback would be much appreciated!
I really should have said “effective” as opposed to “the best”.
I absolutely agree. I am not spending a substantial amount of time on the job boards. I printed out Detroit’s 101 Best and Brightest, and will be working off of the Forbes and Crains list as well.

linda answers:

Snagajob.com is another site that you could go to…Most of the professional jobs don’t do a great deal of advertising their careers on job finder sites. They are advanced enough to have their own websites and hiring managers. I suggest looking at company websites. Go for some of the fortune 500s, especially if you may be planning on moving. They have locations everywhere and you’re bound to find something. Also, people who identify companies that they want to work for and take a visit ther/network are really successful at finding jobs.

Getting Him Back

Have you broken up and found yourself wondering how can I get my boyfriend back?

After all, going through a break up can be one of the hardest things you’ll ever experience .  You may even feel that your heart is literally breaking in two .  You might also feel listless, wrung out with crying over what went wrong and think that your life will never be the same again.

The first few days after a break-up are often crutial .  Then, things may become a little easier, and you may have even gained a little perspective about the whole situation .  However, one thought may be constantly buzzing around in your head and that’s how to get him back.

Before you start coming up with a plan to win your ex back, you should ask yourself if you really and truly want to get back together with him .  If you know you want to make up for the right reasons, then that’s great.  However, if you’re unsure if you really do want your boyfriend back, then why not take a little time for yourself, to make sure you accomplish the right decision?

Once you know you want him back, you should think carefully about how to contact him. Bombarding him with phone calls is not going to work.  Either is texting or emailing him 100 times per day.  These are just some of the mistakes women make that actually drive a man farther away. You may think that persistence is the key , but it’s more likely to backfire on you, and then you won’t have a very good chance at all of getting back together.

So what can you do?

If you want to know how to get him back, then pay careful attention:  You need a plan to get your boyfriend back. Don’t just try and reconcile when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Remember that the reason you broke up was probably something that has been building in your relationship. Wait, even though that’s hard until you’ve had time to allow your emotions to calm down and then put your plan into action.

Keep these points in mind:

Don’t cause a fight or debate.  Remember, the goal is to get back together, not win an argument.

Just focus on getting the first encounter, not saving the relationship. No deep conversations, just lunch or dinner. All you want is to make your most recent encounter safe. That’s the path toward restoring your relationship.

I Miss My Ex Boyfriend

After you break up with a guy, there is a period of loneliness.  Not only are you missing the time that you spent with him, but there is also a piece of your heart that walked out the door when he did.  If you are saying “I miss my ex boyfriend,” here are some ways to get past the feeling.

There are two steps to getting over an ex.  The first is to bring closure to the relationship and the second is to start on the next phase of your life.

Closure is the psychological term for ending a phase of one’s life.  There are many things you can do to stop saying “I miss my ex boyfriend.”

First of all, you should determine that he doesn’t want you back.  As long as you think that there is a chance you can get back together, you will not begin to heal.

To that end, exchange all of the physical possessions you have.  Don’t keep his toothbrush in your bathroom or hold on to his leather jacket.  If you have left clothes or other possessions at his house, pick them up.

If either of you owes the other money, pay it back as soon as possible.

Don’t contact him and don’t let him contact you.  Perhaps you can be friends in the future, but right now, you need time to separate your emotional lives.  If you give in and answer his phone calls, emails, or texts, you are just letting a wound fester.

If you find yourself saying “I miss my ex boyfriend,” sit down and write about it.  Write a letter to him sharing your feelings about the relationship and the break up.  But don’t send it to him.  Throw it away, or even better, burn it.  This will help you bring closure to the relationship.

After you’ve gotten over the initial hurt of the break up, start putting yourself out there again.  It might feel awkward at first, but you are going to have to face life as a single person sometime.  The sooner you get back on the scene, the sooner you will meet someone new.

If your ex took up a big part of your life, you will want to find new past times.  This may mean reconnecting with your girlfriends.  Or, it may mean going out and finding new friends.

One of the best ways to fill the space an old boyfriend took up is to start something new.  Join a class or a co-ed sports team.  See if your local book store has a monthly book club.  Start going to church again.

While it may be hard to get started on the social scene again, you will find that you miss your ex boyfriend much less when you are engaged in activities you enjoy.

When you have the opportunity to, start dating again.  Even if the first guy isn’t someone you can see spending the rest of your life with, accept his invitation to dinner or the movies.  As you get back into the routine of dating, you will be able to find a man who can appreciate and love you.

Whenever you hear yourself thinking “I miss my ex boyfriend,” do something that either brings closure to the relationship or propels you to move forward in your life.

Getting an ex back is hard if you were the one being dumped.  But imagine how you would feel if you were the one who did the dumping?  That is the position that Aimee found herself in and she had to go about getting an ex back.

Aimee’s so called friend Renee told her that her boyfriend Jaime had been sleeping with another woman.  Without verifying the information or even asking Jaime about it, Aimee confronted Jaime and accused him of having an affair.  This took Jaime by complete surprise because he had no inkling that the rumor was circulating, and he didn’t do a good job of defending himself.  Aimee unceremoniously dumped him.

A few days later, Aimee found out that Renee had been lying for her own jealous, petty reasons.  Now Aimee was in a quandary.  Getting an ex back was important to her, but she also wanted to save face.

Aimee called up Jaime and explained what had happened.  But Jaime was in no mood to take her back.  Aimee had hurt him by not trusting him and not even talking things over with him.

Getting an ex back took all of Aimee’s wiles.

First of all, Aimee wrote Jaime a long letter of apology.  She took responsibility for what happened and promised that it would never happen again.  She reminded Jaime that they had a long history together and that they had shared some beautiful times.  She said that she didn’t want to throw all of that away.  She told him that the reason she acted the way she did was because she loved him and couldn’t stand the though of his being with another woman.  The thought of losing him forever was painful.

After she had mailed the letter, she didn’t bother him with constant texts or phone calls.  She figured that getting an ex back after a situation like this one required that she give Jaime his space.

When she did run into Jaime, she was as nice as she could be.  She worked positive memories into the conversation casually.  She didn’t apologize any further though.  She had told him both in person and in writing that she was sorry and let it go at that.

One day, Aimee got tickets for Jaime’s favorite band which was in town for one concert only.  She asked Jaime to go with her “just as friends.”  In this way, she opened the door to a future relationship without crowding him.

Getting an ex back after you have behaved badly and dumped him is difficult.  Not only do you have the embarrassment of having to apologize, but you almost have to start from scratch again on the relationship.  Rebuilding the trust is a key component in this period.

Jaime and Aimee did eventually get back together.  Jaime came to see that Aimee’s outburst was the act of a jealous woman who deeply loved him.  He saw it as a mistake that they could both grow from.  Their relationship became stronger than ever.

Aimee took the right approach to getting an ex back.
